Week 1 Blog EDUC 5243

  1. Select a technology integration framework that could be used by your organization/district to guide and support technology use practices based on the ISTE standards and the evaluation tools used by your district/organization.  TPACK (Mishra & Koehler), SAMR (Puentedura), and the Triple E Framework (Kolb) are good options.  If you would like to explore other frameworks you are welcome to; please establish that they are supported by best practice (educational) research.

DoDEA hasn’t picked one set way to use technology in schools, but I think the Triple E Framework would work really well for Pac West, because Dodea already supports goals by preparing students to be productive global citizens and 21st century learners.

This Framework helps teachers use tech to keep students interested, which makes learning easier for them, and creates lessons that are pertinent to their interests. It also supports important goals like preparing students for college and careers, building 21st-century skills, and teaching in ways that support different learning styles that students tend to have.

  1. Provide a paragraph description of the Framework, you are welcome to link to resources that further describe the framework and are encouraged to embed graphics that help explain it.

The Triple E Framework would be suitable for DoDEA’s Pacific West District because it focuses on real learning through technology use. It encourages students to get  involved, work in teams, and develop critical thinking skills. In addition, it also supports important goals like teaching digital literacy, and preparing students for lifelong learning.

It also helps meet bigger goals like teaching students to be responsible online and preparing them to continue learning throughout life. This helps make it a useful and meaningful tool for improving teaching and learning.

  1. Discuss the appropriateness of the use of this framework/model within your organization/district based on:

  1. Context: Does this model align with other initiatives in place within your district? Are current practices congruent with the model?  Describe.

DoDEA doesn’t currently use a formal framework to guide how technology is integrated into teaching, but adopting the Triple E Framework would be a smart and helpful move especially for the Pac West district. Teachers in the Pac West school district already use digital tools like Google Workspace, Microsoft 365 and interactive learning apps.

Without a shared framework, how technology is used will vary from classroom to classroom, and teacher to teacher depending on each teacher’s experience, comfort level, and preference, along with classroom environment.

In context, the Triple E Framework aligns well with Dodea’s priorities like College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS) and creating 21st-century skills involving collaboration, critical thinking, and  digital literacy.

  1. Relevance: Does this model show promise? Does it address current perspectives/approaches to technology use by educators and students?

DoDEA doesn’t currently use a formal framework for integrating technology, but adopting the Triple E Framework would be a smart and good long-term choice for the Pac West district. The framework fits well with DoDEA’s teaching style today. Technology can be seen as not just as something to use, but a way to make meaningful learning, engaging, and related to students’ lives. If tech is used, it helps teachers focus on whether it’s improving learning. This approach aligns with Pac West’s focus on inquiry-based learning and applying knowledge to real-world situations.

  1. ISTE Alignment:  Can you make clear connections to the ISTE standards through this framework?  Provide details/descriptions

DoDEA follows the ISTE Standards for Educators to guide how technology should be used in schools (ISTE, 2017), but it doesn’t have a set way to measure how that technology affects learning. The Triple E Framework could help improve this, especially in the Pac West district.

Instead of using technology just to say you used it, the Triple E Framework encourages teachers to use it in ways that would get students really involved, collaborating with each other, and thinking deeply. It also supports key goals like teaching students to practice safe digital literacy online and help them build lifelong skills. These reasons are why it’s a strong tool for improving classroom instruction (Kolb, 2017).

The Triple E Framework, developed by Liz Kolb, helps schools use technology in smart ways with a purpose. It aligns with ISTE Standards by promoting independent learning, safe digital behavior, mindful use of online content, creativity, and problem-solving. If implemented in the Pac West district, it could bring consistency to technology use in the classroom among all teachers, and better support DoDEA’s goals for preparing students for lifelong learning.

  1. Evaluation: Does this model/framework align with the evaluation tool in use?  Describe.

There is no specific instructional technology framework for DoDEA, but it does use personalized learning tools like Schoology, Seesaw, Kahoot, and Flip, that support teaching strategies. The tools that focus on things like using technology, student engagement, and checking for understanding align with what is being measured.  (DoDEA, 2023).

  1. Bradley, what an interesting job in education. I would love for you to eventually be able to integrate your knowledge into your role at the Dodea. I also look forward to learning more about what you do at your position and how you see improving it.
    Great information.

  2. Hi Bradley!
My school district has two DoDEA grants focused on STEM/STEAM education. I’d be interested in learning more about your role in DoDEA.
I like how you stated that the Triple E Framework focuses on “real” learning through technology use and that it encourages students to get involved, work in teams, and develop critical thinking skills. I am a STEM teacher at our Intermediate school and Junior High and I use project based learning, which I feel ties in perfectly with the framework. I also agree with you that it also supports goals like teaching digital literacy, and preparing students for lifelong learning. I was surprised to learn that DoDEA doesn’t currently have a formal framework in place. I’m with you though on choosing the Triple E Framework, I think it would be a perfect choice. Great job!
